Fredrick, his wife and
three children, and Ludwig were
all fatally burned in a barn fire on
the Arlington farm on May 4,
1888.  They had left their half-
eaten breakfast on the table.  No
one knows why and how they
came to be in the burning barn.
The accompanying article from
the Arlington Citizen retells the
tragedy and alludes to the fact
that no one, including the F.B.I.,
was able to solve the tragedy.

Fredrick, his wife
Mathilda, his three children, and
Ludwig are buried in the Evan-
gelical Lutheran Cemetery at Ar-
lington, Nebraska.  The big tomb-
stone is inscribed in German with
the first two verses from Isaiah
57, “The righteous perisheth,
etc.”  There are three smaller
tombstone markers for the three
children.
