Minna and her family would take a
trip each summer to visit Freds parents
and brother in Arapahoe, Nebraska. In
the early days of the automobile, a full
day was required for this drive. A lunch
was packed to eat along the way. If rain
was encountered, the family would stay
overnight in a hotel and continue the trip
the next day. They spent a day or two
visiting relatives in Arapahoe. Then, the
Kant family had a day long trip to get
back home.
The year 1929 was filled with
hardships for the Kant family. Reces-
sion, drought, and hail forced Fred to
give up farming for good. Fred found it
hard to find employment to support his
family at that time. In 1934 Fred and
Minna moved to the Grotelueschen
home place north of Columbus, where
Minna was housekeeper for Arthur
Grotelueschen, the eldest of brother Ad-
olphs children. For a time Fred worked
for the W.P.A., which was a program
formed by the Federal Government to
provide work for the unemployed during
the depression. Later, Fred worked as a
hired man for Arthur and did custodial
work and cemetery care for Christ Lu-
theran. Fred died in 1961.
