Rosa always served good food from things she raised or grew. She told the
story of the foreman of a bridge crew working near her home, coming to her and
asking if she would cook meals for them. Rosa told them she would if they didnt
mind eating a lot of chicken, cabbage, and potatoes. Rosa often cut thick slices of
dried beef from a big slab and served it to her children, and later, to her grandchil-
dren. This slice would keep her kin chewing for quite awhile.
Rosa and Henry were the first in the community to have a car. They also had
the first battery operated light plant. They were always interested in things that
would improve life on the farm. Henry was the first farmer in the area to have his
own threshing machine and truck.
