Fears and heartbreak were constant companions of the pioneer.  Few other
white people lived nearby, but Indians came around to look for food.  One day a
cow died, so A. Johann took part of the beef and hung it in a tree thinking that the
Indians would want it.  He put the rest, entrails, etc., on the fire to burn.  The Indi-
ans came to get the beef, but also scratched around in the pile on the ground and
took all they wanted.
